| CONSTRUCTION OF SAINIK BHAWAN AT SHAHKOT |
A need was felt since long to construct Sainik Bhawan at Shahkot, which is hub of activities & nerve centre for Ex-servicemen activities. The Ex-servicemen Welfare Union Shahkot is very active and has been doing yeoman’s service not only for the Ex-servicemen community but also for public in general. This place is a converging point for three Districts viz Jalandhar, Kapurthala & Moga & at least approximately 10000 Ex-servicemen/Widows are concentrated around this belt. We have been working hard on this project, which was mooted in the year 1992-93.
It is gratifying to record here that it is for the first time in the history of our state that Government has sanctioned funds for construction of Sainik Bhawan at Shahkot ie at Tehsil level. The Sainik Bhawan has been constructed at a total cost of Rs 10.50 lakhs & it has to following components: -
|
| |
1. A Memorial with Saluting Base. |
| |
2.Conference Hall for Zila Sainik Board & other Meetings, which are frequently, held at this location. |
| |
3.
Visitor’s waiting Room. |
| |
4.
Canteen Storage and Sales Counter. |
| |
5.Commercial shops (5) to be rented out to Ex-servicemen only. |
| |
6.Toilet Block & conveniences for Ex-servicemen/Widows. |
| |
7.A parking place facing the Sainik Bhawan. |
After the project was completed, we expedited the matter with regards to opening of CSD Canteen in the complex of Sainik Bhawan at Shahkot. The matter was taken up by us with HQ 11 Corps/Western Command. Fortunately Lt Gen SS Mehta, PVSM, AVSM& Bar, VSM, ADC, then GOC-in-C Western Command visited our office complex on 01 Apr 2003 when the request for opening CSD Canteen at Shahkot was reiterated by large number of Ex-service Officers/Men to him. He was considerate & accepted the proposal & eventually CSD Canteen at Shahkot was officially inaugurated on 21 Sep 2003 by Lt Gen S Pattabhiraman, AVSM, SM, VSM, GOC 11 Corps. This made a history in the annals of Sainik Welfare activities & this canteen is a boon for the Ex-servicemen fraternity of this area.
Leter of demand came from Ex-serviceman Union Shahkot to commission an MI Room in this complex. HQ 11 Corps had accepted the necessity, however asked us to construct adequate accommodation for this purpose. Accordingly Deputy Commissioner, Jalandhar released a special grant of Rs 3.00 lakhs and proper accommodation for this purpose has been constructed on first floor of the Sainik Bhawan. The efforts to have the MI Room commissioned are in hard & we envisage that this wills fructify shortly.
